Understanding Interstitial Cystitis: A Guide to Managing Symptoms

A chronic condition that can range from mild discomfort to severe suffering, interstitial cystitis, also referred to as painful bladder syndrome, is characterized by bladder pressure, bladder pain, and occasionally pelvic pain. Individual differences may exist in the symptoms, which may also fluctuate over time.

Interstitial Cystitis (IC) symptoms can include urgency (an abrupt, intense urge to urinate), frequent urination, pelvic pain or discomfort, and pain during sex. These symptoms have the potential to drastically lower a woman’s quality of life by interfering with her relationships, career,         and  social   activities.

Causes of Interstitial Cystitis: It can be difficult to diagnose and treat Interstitial Cystitis (IC) because its precise cause is unknown. However, a number of factors, such as autoimmune reactions, nerve dysfunction, bladder lining inflammation, and genetic predisposition, may play a role in its development.
